History of the Firm
McGregor & Company was founded by Calvert C. McGregor and Ralph O. Tuten. Mr. McGregor and his business partner had a vision of offering superior bookkeeping and accounting services to South Carolina companies. Mr. McGregor, one of the state's first certified public accountants, founded his company on a commitment to excellence, trust and personal service to clients.
The company began as Commercial Audit Company and was located in the old National Loan and Exchange Building on Washington Street in downtown Columbia. In the late 1940s, the name was changed to C. C. McGregor and Company. The company changed its name to McGregor and Company, L.L.P. as part of its 75th anniversary celebration. Founder Calvert C. McGregor retired in 1964. The current managing partner, Gerald D. Skipper, was named in 1998.
Today, with three offices and 53 employees, including 34 in Columbia, 7 in Barnwell and 12 in Orangeburg, McGregor has grown into a full-service accounting and financial services firm, with clients throughout the state. All three McGregor offices are in general practice.
The firm has enjoyed a fine reputation professionally, both in the public sector and among other practicing certified public accountants (CPAs). Six of its partners have served as president of the South Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants. These and other partners and staff members have served in responsible positions in local, regional and national accounting organizations, as well as local civic and charitable organizations. Professional services provided by the firm include accounting, auditing, tax and management services. In addition to audits of commercial and industrial organizations, the firm's auditing experience includes audits of towns, cities, water-work systems, counties, school districts, hospitals and various other nonprofit entities.
